improv thought.

I was talking improv late last night with a buddy and had the following thought, which I quite liked.  It may or may not be horseshit, but this is the abridged version of much longer (boring er) musical analogy.

I think improvisers, their aptitudes, can be broadly categorized as follows:

BACH

The most technically sophisticated players.  Clean mathematical moves played with absolute precision.  They find the game, then give you 35 variations on a theme.

BEETHOVEN

Powerful artists.  See the big picture of the piece, its complexities and layered dynamics.  Undeniable energy, with risky, unapologetic boldness.

CHOPIN

Infuse their work with heart and honesty.  Create rich texture and sensual environments.  Explore personal connections and depths of feeling.

that’s all.

In a way this is a classy version of “Robot, Pirate, Ninja”. Sort of. I love it!
