“Two thousand years and what have we learned?”
I had a philosophy professor in college, a former Jesuit priest turned atheist/anarchist/all around badass, whom I respected immensely. I remember him asking the above question frequently regarding various unthinkable modern infringements on human rights: capital punishment, anti-gay legislation, etc.
A potentially innocent man was murdered today by his government. In 2011.
The culture of my college was heavily focused on social justice, and “learning in the service of others.” I thought about Professor Duggan a lot today, about the gravity of that question, about how Troy Davis died because I did nothing to stop it. (I’ve elected that tweets and Cheetos auditions are a more meaningful utilization of my day’s work). I hope Professor Duggan is well tonight, and knows that his life in the service of others affected how I see the world.
